Strength to strength
Gary Grewal is a true ‘one club’ man. He’s the ultimate OCA loyalist. Since moving to Canada at the age of 15, he has lead the OCA at U16, U19 and every single senior tier from 3rd Division to S9.
With a rich background in the sport, Gary's cricket journey began at the illustrious Mohali Cricket Academy, where he honed his skills playing alongside Indian cricketers such as Gurkeerat Mann, Manpreet Gony, Simi Singh (Ireland), Sunny Sohal, and Jaskaran Buttar for Mohali U16.
He later migrated to New Zealand and studied and a played cricket at the famous Papetoetoe High School alongside Bhupinder Singh (Auckland) and Ish Sodhi (Northern Districts, New Zealand).
Gary then moved to Canada and started playing at Ontario Cricket Academy under coach Derek Perera. In addition to captaining the OCA first team, he went on to represent Saskatchewan in Western T20 and Toronto and District in Central T20. Gary has also completed a double masters degree in Applied Ecology and Environmental Resource Management.
Reaching new heights
Over the years, he has evolved into an accomplished cricket coach, holding an ICC Level 2 coaching certification and also a Level 2 coach from the renowned Gary Kirsten’s CoachED program.
Coaching OCA at all age group levels, he also has been working tirelessly in OCA’s High Performance Program. Gary currently serves as the coach for the Ontario provincial U16 cricket team, showcasing his expertise in nurturing young talents and contributing to the development of cricket at the regional level. Additionally, he conducts coaching camps for Cricket Saskatoon, demonstrating his commitment to spreading cricket knowledge and fostering the growth of the sport in diverse communities.
In line with the evolving landscape of coaching, Gary Grewal emphasizes a coaching philosophy rooted in trust and communication, fostering open dialogue and active listening. Players can anticipate tailored approaches that respect their uniqueness, ensuring that communication transcends mere instruction to become a two-way street of understanding and respect. He creates an environment where athletes feel supported, understood, and empowered to excel both on and off the field.
Gary's coaching expertise extends to the intricacies of fast bowling, where he places a strong emphasis on three key pillars: tactical prowess, bowler-specific conditioning, and biomechanical soundness.
Gary has been instrumental in mentoring players who have gone on to play for Canada. His coaching philosophy, combined with his extensive experience and commitment to player development, makes him a valuable asset to the OCA. His dedication to fostering trust, open communication, and technical excellence contributes significantly to the growth and success of cricket in the region.
